Air Canada Overhauls Aeroplan Starting in 2026

Beginning January 1, 2026, members will earn points based on how much they spend, rather than how far they fly.

The airline also announced a new system for achieving Aeroplan Elite status, introducing Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) as a single metric that reflects a member’s engagement across flights, Aeroplan credit card use, and participation with program partners.

What’s Changing in 2026:

Points Based on Spend: Members will earn a minimum of 1 Aeroplan point per $1 spent on eligible Air Canada flights (excluding taxes and third-party fees). For instance, a $427 base fare would earn 427 points.

Elite Members Earn More: Depending on your elite status level at the time of travel, members can earn between 2x and 6x Aeroplan points per dollar spent.

New Elite Status Path: Starting in 2026, elite status will be earned through Status Qualifying Credits (SQC). Members can earn:

  • Up to 4 SQC per $1 spent on eligible fares (based on fare type).
  • Up to 25,000 SQC through Aeroplan credit card spending.
  • An additional 25,000 SQC through eligible partner activity.

Elite Status Benefits Will Include:

  • Perks like priority airport services and complimentary checked baggage.
  • Milestone rewards every 10,000 SQC, such as bonus SQC and Status Passes.
  • A 10% SQC bonus starting in 2027 for premium Aeroplan credit cardholders who qualify for elite status.

There are no changes to how members qualify for Aeroplan Elite status in 2025.

Air Canada says the updates are designed to better reward members who fly often, spend more, and actively engage with the loyalty program beyond booking flights.

You’re running out of time if you want to get a European stamp in your passport.

It's nearing the end for travellers to receive those beloved passport stamps from several European countries as a new digital system will start phasing them out in the coming weeks.

A year after its initial announcement, the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) will go into effect on Oct. 12, 2025 automating the border-crossing of non-EU nationals for short-stay visits in 29 countries, according to the official EU website. The new system was supposed to be implemented last November, but it was delayed.

"The EES will gradually replace passport stamps with a digital system that records when travellers enter and exit, making border checks faster and helping staff to work more efficiently," the website states. By April 10, 2026, the system will be fully in use.

It is meant to streamline border crossings while also increasing the security of the Schengen Area.  With the EES, foreign visitors will have their faces and fingerprints scanned at border control rather than having their passport stamped. Border officers will verify a traveller's entry and exit into the country with the biometric data, which will also be stored for future reference.

This is just another new entry system for visa-free travellers going to the EU.   The new Entry/Exit System (EES) will start operations in October 2025. European countries using the EES will introduce the system gradually at their external borders. This means that data collection will be gradually introduced at border crossing points with full implementation by 10 April 2026.
